About Dr. Purswani

Shyam Purswani, MD, holds dual board certification in anesthesiology and subspecialty in pain medicine, a highly specialized field dedicated to helping patients find relief from their pain. At his private practice in San Antonio, he and his staff treat each patient with deep care and compassion, always keeping the patient’s best interest at heart.

Dr. Purswani develops a customized treatment for each patient, using a multimodal approach to pain management that incorporates the latest techniques and best practices. He works closely with each patient throughout their care, providing interventional pain management and encouraging and empowering them in self-management of their pain.

Dr. Purswani was born and raised in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, and then relocated to enter the School of Medicine at the American University of the Caribbean. Dr. Purswani finished his clinical training at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan, spent a year in research at Cornell in New York, New York, and then spent five years of residency training, beginning in New Jersey and finishing at Baylor University in Houston.

Since opening his practice in San Antonio in 1997, Dr. Purswani has focused 100% on pain management. He gives lectures locally, regionally, and sometimes nationally, and teaching diverse pain topics to health care providers, nurses, and primary care providers.

Dr. Purswani diligently completes the requirements to maintain his board certifications in anesthesiology and pain medicine. He recertified in pain medicine in January 2019, which is valid until 2028, and his anesthesiology certification is valid indefinitely. He’s also proud to be a Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice and is affiliated with several hospitals in the San Antonio area, including Baptist Medical Center and Methodist Hospital.

Dr. Purswani is intermediate in Spanish and converses at a beginner level in Russian, while staff at his practice are fluent in Spanish.

When he’s not helping patients in the office, Dr. Purswani loves to travel and spend time with friends and family. He’s devoted to yoga, which he practices four to six times weekly.
